My Favorite Steely Dan Songs

My Favorite Steely Dan Songs

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a big fan of Steely Dan, an American jazz-rock band founded by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen in 1972. Owning several of their CD’s, I thought that I’d share a list of some of my favorite songs…

With a cornucopia of great songs to select from, most of my favorites aren’t the most popular, commercially successful recordings. With that in mind, here’s a chronological listing of the Steely Dan CD’s which I own, wherein I’ve cited three of my favorites in the order in which they appear –

Can’t Buy A Thrill (1972)

  • Midnite Cruiser
  • Only A Fool Would Say That
  • Turn That Heartbeat Over Again

Countdown To Ecstasy (1973)

  • Razor Boy
  • The Boston Rag
  • Your Gold Teeth

Pretzel Logic (1974)

  • Any Major Dude Will Tell You
  • Charlie Freak
  • Monkey In Your Soul

Katy Lied (1975)

  • Rose Darling
  • Doctor Wu
  • Your Gold Teeth II

The Royal Scam (1976)

  • The Caves of Altamira
  • Haitian Divorce
  • The Royal Scam

Aja (1977)

  • Black Cow
  • Aja
  • Peg

Gaucho (1980)

  • Babylon Sisters
  • Glamour Profession
  • Time Out of Mind

Gold / Expanded Edition (1991)

  • FM
  • Here At The Western World
  • True Companion

Two Against Nature (2000)

  • Almost Gothic
  • Jack of Speed
  • West of Hollywood

Everything Must Go (2003)

  • Green Book
  • Pixeleen
  • Everything Must Go

So, what’s my all-time favorite Steely Dan song? While difficult to select just one song, I’d probably have to say, Here At The Western World, a recording originally released on a 2-album “Greatest Hits” (1978) record set which I owned, many moons ago. As to which Steely Dan CD is my all-time favorite, it’s a tie between Countdown To Ecstasy & Katy Lied.
