Located on the Cumberland Plateau along the Blackburn Fork River, near Cookeville, Tennessee, Cummins Falls stands 75-feet tall, representing the eighth largest waterfall (by volume of water) in the state.
Because it’s so popular, the state park has instituted an inexpensive online permitting system, required in advance for all visitors interested in hiking the gorge. The trail to the waterfall is 1.5 miles, and hikers can expect to get wet because, at points, the riverbed is the trail – roughly knee deep.
The area is prone to flash flooding, so children twelve & under must be accompanied by an adult, as well as wear a life jacket while at the falls or swimming. In case of emergency, signs are posted which indicate safe levels during a flood, and there is an evacuation route.
There’s a waterfall overlook (no permit required). Ample parking. Restrooms available. Water shoes recommended. Dogs allowed. Bring your camera to capture an abundance of scenic beauty!

Cummins Falls is a popular & scenic waterfall located along the Blackburn Fork River near Cookeville, Tennessee. I shot this photograph while visiting in 2019, and have formatted this black and white picture in a style similar to the technique used by the famous photographer Ansel Adams.
This is not a limited print, and prints are available in my gallery at Pixels. Select from framed, canvas, art, poster, metal, wood, acrylic and tapestry options.
Just about every angle of this waterfall was conducive for photography, including this view of stepped-layers of rock at the base. I’d wanted to visit this spot for several months, and I’m now certainly glad to have done so! You can see more in my gallery at Pixels.

With an early start, I was the first person to arrive at Cummins Falls, and enjoyed the tranquil setting for over an hour. Though the volume of water flowing over the 75′ waterfall was less than full, it was a pleasant visit which I can recommend to anyone in the area! Visit my gallery to see more.
It was a quiet morning as I hiked in a gorge along the Blackburn Fork River. My destination was just over a mile ahead – Cummins Falls. A winding riverbed introduced turn after turn, with brief views around each bend. Finally, as I walked underneath a rock outcropping, I was there. See more in my gallery.
I recently visited Cummins Falls State Park on the Blackburn Fork River. Located near Cookeville, Tennessee, the waterfall has an elevation of 75 feet and is Tennessee’s eighth largest waterfall in volume of water. The park features an overlook, access to the top of the waterfall & a 1.5 mile trail into the gorge.
Visitors should be aware while hiking along the river that, depending on rain present in the watershed upstream, flash floods can occur quickly. Park rules stipulate that all children 12 & under must be accompanied by an adult, and must wear a life jacket while at the falls and/or while swimming.
The trail through the forest to the gorge is in good condition, consisting of hard-pack dirt with posted wooden railings along cliffs, and limited stairs (where necessary). Hikers should be prepared to walk in shallow water – it’s unavoidable as, often, the riverbed is the trail. I was up to my knees once, though more commonly wading in only ankle-deep water.
While hiking at Cummins Falls State Park, I observed several different types of flowers, fungus, a garter snake, a small blue tailed lizard, and a mountain crayfish that was approx. 1/2 foot in length.
