Although falling snow can sometimes serve as an impediment for good photographs – large, blurred streaks – my walk today in the snow covered forest was a pleasant excursion into nature, where I found several nice winter scenes along the way. The trail I followed is located at Island Drive Park in Ann Arbor, Michigan, meandering aside the Huron River near the soccer fields of Fuller Park.

Built in 1912-1913, Barton Dam is one of Ann Arbor’s four dams on the Huron River. It stands 34 feet high and 1767 feet long. This hydroelectric power facility has a 900-kilowatt turbine that generates 4.2 million kWh per year. Perhaps twilight, not sunrise, better describes this early hour on the Huron River in Ann Arbor, Michigan. So early, in fact, that not a single rower was boating yet – this being a favorite stretch of the river for such exercise. Peaceful and calm, with faint reflections of clouds unbroken, though periodically a fish would surface to stir ripples into the water. I looked at my watch and realized that it was time to go, 6:05 a.m., so I filled my water bottle, grabbed my camera and hopped on my bike for a short three mile ride to the Huron Parkway.
